This Firefighter Hero WOD is dedicated to Carlos Lillo, FDNY, Paramedic, who was killed on September 11, 2001.
Carlos Lillo, 37, of North Babylon was one of two New York City Fire Department paramedics to die on 9/11. He was last seen running into the World Trade Center concourse near the South Tower lobby.
Haydee Cecilia Lillo worked on the 64th floor of the North Tower, and survived the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. After marrying paramedic Carlos Lillo in 2000, she made him promise not to risk his life by looking for her if another bombing occurred. And she promised to get out because “somebody who loves me would be out there waiting for me.”
On September 11, she got out. But by then, the one who loved her had already died. At first, she was angry at him. Then she pieced together what happened in his last hour, from magazine photos and eye witness accounts, and “I was so proud of him for doing his job. He did keep his promise.” As he treated evacuees in a triage area, a call came in about a cardiac arrest in the South Tower. Lillo was last seen running into the World Trade Center concourse shortly before the tower collapsed.
