Background: The “Mowrey” memorial WOD, created in honor of Sergeant Jim Mowrey of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, is a tribute to his life and service.
Sergeant Mowrey passed away on August 9, 2023, following a determined battle against cancer. Starting his career on January 2, 2007, Jim served with distinction for 16 years in various roles, including patrol duty, court bailiff, special agent of the Drug Task Force, Field Training Officer, and Corporal. He also held esteemed positions in the Sheriff’s SWAT team as Team Leader and Team Commander.
This workout, consisting of 11 rounds to symbolize his call sign “X11” and repetitions reflecting the date of his end of watch (EOW), is designed to represent the substantial responsibilities Jim shouldered as a leader, mentor, protector, and brother. The inclusion of heavy lifting and midline exercises symbolizes the weight of his duties and the profound loss felt by his colleagues and community.
Sergeant Mowrey was known for his commitment to physical fitness and his encouragement of others to maintain a healthy lifestyle. He was a devoted husband and a loving father to four children, with the youngest being six years old. His legacy in the Humboldt County community, marked by selflessness and dedication, has garnered him numerous commendations and expressions of gratitude.
Created by Thomas O’Kane and submitted by William Honsal, Sheriff, the “Mowrey” WOD is a respectful acknowledgment of Sergeant Mowrey’s impactful service and the void left by his passing.
